We hope that this is a place where we can educate you on Crime Prevention techniques and answer some questions you may be having about protecting yourself from crime. We believe that by educating the community on crime prevention techniques and by getting citizens involved in crime prevention activities, such as the Neighborhood Watch program, we can reduce the number of crimes in the City of Independence and increase the quality of life for its citizens.

Keep in mind, no place is totally "crime proof". You must take steps to reduce your likelihood of becoming a victim of a crime through personal education and taking preventative measures.

The police department is strongly encouraging citizens to utilize an online tool to request non-emergency police services. Examples of past requests include: traffic and drug complaints, neighborhood problems, and starting a Neighborhood Watch.

This easy method involves simply going online to independencemo.org/actioncenter and filling out a simple form. You will be asked to create a free myIndependence account, which will allow you to track the progress of your request. You will leave contact information (telephone/email) so the appropriate police officer can contact you about the issue. You will also explain your request in a small narrative section, and if it applies, an address. It’s that simple! We believe this way of helping you solve problems will be faster and more effective for both citizens and the police department. Certain police officers have specific roles that they perform for the police department. The Action Center allows us to categorize the requests, assign them to the appropriate officer and track them so your needs are met.

Please note: This does not supplement making a formal police report to document a crime or traffic crash. This is also not a method to use for any emergency situation. Still call 911 or the non-emergency number, 325-7300 for these matters.

Thanks,

Officer Matt McLaughlin
