Storm Water

Storm Water Division
14909 Truman Road
Independence, MO 64050
(816) 325-7727

The Storm Water Division is responsible for the capital improvement program, the pollution control program, and the maintenance and repair of the storm sewer system. There are over 300 miles of storm sewers in Independence and approximately 12,000 storm water structures, such as curb inlets and culverts.

Unlike wastewater, which is treated at a treatment plant, stormwater goes directly from the storm sewer system into local creeks and rivers.

Anything on sidewalks, streets, and parking lots, such as trash, motor oil, pet waste, or excess pesticides and fertilizers, is carried away by rain runoff and ends up in storm drains. We encourage you to keep litter, pet wastes, leaves and grass clippings out of streets and curb inlets.

Maintenance and repair activities include cleaning of the structures and storm sewer systems, lid replacement, inspections, and repair and construction.

Sanitary Sewer Maintenance

Sewer Maintenance Division
Collection Systems Maintenance
14909 East Truman Road
Independence, Missouri 64050
(816) 325-7727

Independence has separate sanitary and storm sewer systems.

The Sanitary Sewer Maintenance Division is responsible for the maintenance and repair of over 578 miles of sanitary sewers and over 12,000 manholes.  Service is both preventive and corrective.  Approximately 25 million gallons of wastewater are carried through the sanitary sewer lines each day for treatment at a wastewater facility.

Maintenance activities consist of flushing and cleaning sewer lines by hydraulic pressure cleaning, mechanical rodding, and root sawing.

Closed circuit video inspection, or CCTV, and dye/smoke testing are used to respond to complaints from citizens, identify inflow and infiltration, and to inspect new construction. Another part of the Sewer Maintenance Division's activities include surveillance and analysis, such as flow monitoring, sampling, and environmental inspections.

Repair activities consist of pull and replace rehabilitation of sanitary sewer lines, trenchless technology, and repair work.
