“Mrs. Truman: Trailblazer of First Ladies”
Former First Lady Bess Truman left herbeloved family home at 219 North Delaware Street to the American people in herwill upon her passing in October 1982. As the National Park Service and HarryS. Truman Presidential Library and Museum were working together to prepare thehome for public tours, Margaret Truman Daniel, Harry and Bess' only child, wasinstrumental in the process. Margaret Truman became a singer, televisionpersonality, author of over twenty five books, wife and mother of four sons. During a 1984 episode of a PBS series called"Smithsonian World," aired less than two years after her mother'sdeath, an emotional Mrs. Daniel shared stories with writer David McCullough,and gave viewers a rare glimpse into the private lives of the Trumans via atour of their home, almost top to bottom. Not aired since 1984, the documentarywill be showed in celebration of the Mrs. Truman and Mrs. Daniel, both of whomintroduced Independence, Missouri and Midwestern life to the White House andthe world. Join the National Park Service staff at 6:30pm for this free presentation. This event is part of the celebration of National Historic Preservation Month and is co-sponsored by the City of Independence, Historic Preservation Division.

Experiential History Program
Have you ever wished you could step back in time and speak with a person from the past? Every Saturday, May through September, you can do just that in historic Independence, Missouri. First person interpreters portray characters from various time periods to bring history to life for residents and visitors alike. Interpreters will be on-site at the historic Independence Square, the 1827 Log Courthouse, the National Frontier Trails Museum, the Chicago and Alton Depot, and the Vaile Mansion. This weekend, make Independence your destination for fun and learning! Time: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm Free
