Do you know someone who deserves recognition for making Independence a better place to live and work? The City of Independence, in partnership with the Independence Sustainability Commission, wants to honor individuals or groups of businesses that promote sustainability by making their community a safer and more beautiful place to live.

Criteria for the Sustainability Award include:

  • Measurable sustainability efforts or have a visible impact on the Independence community
  • Efforts that increase community safety
  • Efforts that add to City aesthetics (examples include landscaping, painting, community gardens, improvements to existing structures, trash removal and more)
  • Efforts to reduce carbon emissions (examples include ride-share groups, encouragement of environmentally friendly transport, installation of bike rakes and more)
  • Efforts that encourage other City of Independence residents to care about and foster sustainable practices

Applications are considered from January through December. Judging will take place in late February with the award given to the recipient in April.

Look for more information coming soon about how to nominate a member of the community.
