Suspicious Device Located

Shortly after 5:00 P.M. yesterday (02/26/2018), Independence police officers were dispatched to the Independence Ridge Apartment complex in the 19000 block of on E. 37th terrace on a suspicious device.

We were told that apartment maintenance staff located a suspicious device inside an unoccupied apartment that was undergoing repairs. IPD's Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit was activated and responded. They conducted an on-scene investigation. No one lived in the apartment where the device was located.

One apartment building in the complex was evacuated and residents of surrounding apartment buildings were asked to stay inside their home and away from windows for their safety. At about 11:00 PM, the device was safely removed from the apartment complex by the EOD unit and destroyed at an off-site location. The scene was determined to be safe and all police officers cleared the call.

The suspicious device was determined to be an improvised explosive device made of consumer-grade fireworks with added shrapnel. We appreciate the patience and cooperation of the residents of the apartment complex. This is still an ongoing investigation.
