Police Officer Shot During Residential Burglary Call

At 9:43 a.m. today, police officers responded to a residential burglary in-progress call in the 3600 Block of S. Delaware Avenue.

While on scene, one of the responding police officers was shot.

The suspects fled the scene in a vehicle taken from the residence and led police officers on a pursuit that ended at E. 23rd Street and S. Cedar Avenue. Two suspects were taken into custody.

The officer who was shot was transported to an area hospital and is still being treated at the time of this release. The police officer is currently in critical condition.

More information will be released when it becomes available. This is an active investigation. Suspect information, as well as information on criminal charges, will not be released until charges are formally filed.



The Independence police officer critically injured in today's shooting is Officer Thomas Wagstaff, a 15 year veteran of the Independence Police Department.

Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers while he is being treated at the hospital.
