IPD Officer Critically Injured
A message from Chief of Police Brad Halsey
As you know, one of our police officers, Officer Tom Wagstaff was critically injured yesterday during a call for service. Officer Wagstaff is a 15 year member of the Independence Police Department. He is 42 years old.
Officer Wagstaff’s condition has not changed since yesterday. He is still hospitalized and in critical condition. Out of respect for the family, we will not be providing any details about Officer Wagstaff’s medical condition or the extent of his injuries at this time.
We want to thank the men and women of the Kansas City Missouri Police Department for assisting us in the many moving parts of this situation and with conducting this investigation.
We cannot overstate our appreciation for the show of support that we’ve received from the community and from other law enforcement agencies and organizations. It is unfortunately at times like these that we really learn how much our police officers are loved and respected by our community.
As far as the details of the incident, I cannot discuss it or provide any details because the investigation is still ongoing and the integrity of case is of the utmost importance. We ask for privacy for Officer Wagstaff’s family during this incredibly difficult time.
The last 24 hours have been difficult but we will get through this. We want to reassure everyone that the Independence Police Department will remain diligent in continuing our police mission and that the men and women are dedicated to serving and protecting our community.
We ask for prayers for Officer Wagstaff, his family, and for members of the Independence Police Department.
Chief Brad Halsey
