Police Seek Help Finding Homicide Suspect

At 7:39 PM yesterday evening, the Independence Police Department responded to the 1600 block of South Sterling Avenue on a shooting that had just occurred.

We learned that an adult female victim had been shot at the intersection of Winner Road and Sterling Avenue while driving a minivan with three other occupants; an eight month old baby, a three year old and a 16 year old. The victim’s vehicle came to rest in the 1600 block of S. Sterling Avenue which is where she was located by first responders. She had been shot one time and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Fortunately, none of the juveniles in the vehicle were physically injured during the incident.

The suspect vehicle immediately fled the scene. The shooting appears to be the result of a road rage incident between the two vehicles. Based on our initial investigation, we said earlier that we were looking for a white pickup with a grey camper shell. Upon further investigation, we now believe the suspect vehicle is the pictured white colored SUV. The suspect and driver of the S.U.V. is believed to be a white male in his early twenties, with a thin build.

The victim has been identified as Whitney M. Gray, a 22 year old white female, from Independence.  The victim’s family has been notified.

The homicide investigation is still being actively investigated by IPD detectives. We are asking the public for information about the pictured white SUV. If you know anything about this incident or this vehicle, please call the TIPS Hotline (816) 474-TIPS or IPD tips at (816) 325-7777 or email leads@indepmo.org
