Two Suspects Arrested in Overnight Homicide

Last night at 11:58 pm, Independence Police Officers were dispatched to an Armed Robbery in the parking lot of the Walgreens at 23rd and Sterling (2261 S. Sterling Avenue).

When officers arrived, they learned that an adult male had been shot. He was immediately transported to an area hospital with a life threatening gunshot injury. Two suspects had fled the scene before the officers arrived.

Police officers were able to track both suspects to an apartment building in the 1700 block of S. Sterling Avenue. When the officers arrived, one of the suspects quickly surrendered and was taken into custody.

The second suspect refused to exit but was believed to still be inside the apartment. Various additional police officers responded to assist including tactical police units. At about 3:00 am, we were told that the shooting victim had died in the hospital. At about 3:25 am, the second suspect exited the apartment and was taken into custody without incident.

The identity of the victim will not be released until his family has been notified. The identity of the suspects will not be released until charge information becomes available.
