Stolen Gun Taken Off the Streets after Pursuit Ends Safely

Independence police received a call at 6:26 am that a subject in a vehicle fired a gun outside of a home near 31st and Hidden valley during a disturbance. Officers responded and located the vehicle that matched that given by the caller and initiated a traffic stop. The driver refused to pull over and led officers on a pursuit. The pursuit continued north of that location and a passenger fled from the vehicle around 291 Highway and Frontage road. The passenger was taken into custody.

The driver continued to flee from police and several ‘stop stick’ devices were successfully deployed slowing down the vehicle. Shortly thereafter, the vehicle turned around and went south on 291. More stop stick devices were deployed which flattened all four tires. The vehicle came to a stop on Hidden Valley, just east of 291 Highway. The driver, and sole occupant at the time, fled from the vehicle on foot and was apprehended by officers after a short foot pursuit.

A firearm was located in the vehicle along with a spent shell casing. It was determined that no one had been shot at the initial scene. On scene, police officers were not able to locate a cooperative victim who could provide additional information. The firearm, a .40 caliber Glock, was determined to be a reported stolen weapon.

Suspect information, as well as information on criminal charges, will not be released until charges are formally filed.
