On today’s date at approximately 10:25 a.m. dispatch received a call that suspects in a brown pickup truck had stolen the radio out of his car and the victim said he was following the suspect vehicle in the area of Truman Rd. and 291 Hwy. An Independence Officer was close by and saw the suspect vehicle southbound on 291 Hwy and attempted to stop the suspects but the suspect vehicle continued southbound on 291 Hwy and turned Westbound onto I-70. Area law enforcement agencies were alerted. At I-70 and Noland Rd. two IPD Officers were able to deflate the two tires on the right side of the pickup with spike strips, but the suspect driver swerved toward the officers. The officers were able to get out of the way quickly enough to avoid injury. The suspect vehicle continued on to Kansas City, MO, and at one point the suspect driver rammed an Independence Police car, the officer was not injured. KCPD Police Officers were able to deflate the other two tires but the suspect driver continued the pursuit to the area of 169 Hwy and Vivion Road in North Kansas City, MO, where the pursuit ended.
The suspect vehicle had been riding on the rims without tires and had generated enough heat to set the suspect vehicle on fire. The fire department quickly responded and extinguished the flames. The suspect driver fled the vehicle into an apartment area but was quickly apprehended. The other two suspects were taken into custody from the suspect vehicle.
An inventory of the vehicle before it was towed revealed the suspects not only had the victim’s radio, but also had a loaded weapon along with a substantial amount of illegal drugs. No one was injured during the incident and it is an ongoing investigation.
