Car Jacking / Pursuit / Shooting

On today’s date at approximately 2:15 p.m. a male victim reported that he was sitting at a stop sign near Susquehanna Ridge and Bundschu Rd. when a male suspect suddenly got into his car on the passenger side. The suspect produced a handgun, the victim got out of his car, and the suspect drove away with the victim’s car.

At 2:46 p.m. an Independence Police officer spotted the vehicle on 291 Hwy, notified dispatch, and engaged in a pursuit when the suspect sped away. The suspect drove northbound on 291 Hwy to the Missouri River Bridge and turned around heading southbound on 291 Hwy. The suspect turned onto Courtney Rd. then headed westbound on Kentucky Rd. toward Sugar Creek. The suspect then turned north onto a private road that led to a light industrial park, drove off of the roadway and stopped the car. He then got out of the vehicle and began firing the weapon at the lone police officer. The officer returned fire striking the suspect. The suspect was fatally wounded and pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. There were no reports of victim or officer injuries.

The name of the suspect will not be released until notifications can be made. The investigation will continue and more information will be released as soon as it is appropriate.
