Burglary in Progress

At approximately 4:04 p.m. this date, Independence Police received a call that a burglary was in progress at a house in the 600 block of S. Fairview. As officers were in route to the address the caller said the suspect had fled the house and ran toward the woods. The caller also reported that the suspect burglar had stolen a loaded handgun from the residence. Officers began setting up a perimeter and then received information that a suspicious person matching the description of the suspect was spotted at a location in the general area of the burglary getting into a vehicle. An officer responded to investigate and the driver of the suspect vehicle left westbound on 24 hwy with the suspicious person and another passenger.  The officer followed with the intent of stopping the vehicle but the suspect driver sped away from the officer. The officer gave the license plate number and description of the vehicle and dispatch replied that the vehicle was reported to be stolen.

The officer initiated a pursuit as the suspect vehicle drove southbound on 435 hwy. The Kansas City Police were notified and their helicopter was requested to assist with tracking the suspect vehicle. The helicopter crew spotted the suspect vehicle just south of I-70 still headed southbound on 435 hwy. At that point the pursuing police officers backed down from the pursuit and monitored the helicopter radio traffic as to the location of the suspect vehicle.

The helicopter pilot kept following the suspect vehicle and eventually notified officers on the ground that the suspect vehicle had struck another vehicle from behind at about 435 hwy and Gregory. The officers requested fire and medical be in route, arrived at the scene of the crash, checked for injuries and took three people into custody. The three people who were in the suspect vehicle were transported to local hospitals with what appeared to be non life threatening injuries No one from the victim vehicle was reported to be injured.
