News Release

For immediate release:  May 1, 2015

At about 8:11 PM this evening, the Independence Police Department was contacted by Kansas City Southern Railway regarding a train versus pedestrian collision at Winner Road and Home Avenue, under a bridge.  Upon the officers' arrival, it was apparent that one white female pedestrian was deceased and a white male pedestrian needed immediate medical attention.  Police officers, along with medical personnel, provided lifesaving efforts on the male subject, who was then transported to an area hospital.

It is still unknown why the subjects were on the railroad tracks when they were struck.  There was no pedestrian crossing in the area. Both subjects have been identified. The initial investigation revealed that the subjects were both in their 50s, from Colorado and have been in the Independence area for several weeks. The name of the deceased subject will only be released upon notification of family members.
