Two women charged in abuse of 10-year-old child
Two Independence women have been charged in connection with the alleged abuse of a 10-year-old child that resulted in the child suffering serious physical injury, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Chianna Hendrix, 25 (dob: 9/24/1989), and LaTrecia L. Hendrix, 36 (dob: 8/31/1978), each face Abuse or Neglect of a Child, a Class B Felony.*
According to court records, officers on Monday came into contact with the victim in responding to a call regarding a runaway child. Officers noticed the juvenile was emaciated and under developed for age. They fed the child and the child immediately became ill. Further observation at the hospital led the officers to believe the child was the victim of severe neglect. Due to the extent of injuries, the child was transported to Children’s Mercy Hospital. In the child’s residence, police found a bottle of urine on the floor. A younger child in the home told investigators that the victim was often beaten for stealing food and was locked in the basement. Both defendants told police they knew the victim was in need of medical care and they chose not seek care.
Prosecutors have requested a bond of $100,000 for each defendant.
The two suspects will be arraigned on Wednesday, March 25, 2015, in Jackson County Court 308 W. Kansas Ave. Independence, MO, between 10:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
Independence Police are requesting anyone who may have any information regarding this child or the crimes involved in this case, please contact the Independence Police Department Detective Unit at (816) 325-7330.
