 Beware of Scam

There is a scam in the metropolitan area we have seen before that is being used to elicit money from businesses and homes by thieves that you should be aware.  The scammer will call the victim and identify them self as being the City’s electric company representative.  They then say the victim is behind on paying their utility bill and the service truck is in the area to shut off the electricity. The scammer then informs the victim that unless they receive a money card of some sort that has been obtained from a convenience store to pay the bill by a certain time that day the electricity will be shut off.

Please be aware that utility companies do not make such calls.  If you receive a call such as this please contact your utility company directly to verify your account and notify them of the scam.  Do not call any phone number the scammer may give you. Then call the police department to make a report of the incident.

If you or anyone you know has any information regarding who may be perpetrating or connected with any type of scam operation, please call the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-8477 or the Federal Bureau of Investigation at (816) 512-8200.
