The City of Independence is uniquely positioned in the Kansas City Metro as the only municipal provider of electrical, water and wastewater services.  At this time, the City is seeking a dynamic and engaged individual to serve as the Communications and Public Outreach Coordinator.  Under the immediate supervision of the Public Information Officer, this position will perform a variety of duties with the primary goal of promoting a general understanding of the services, programs, and community impact of the City of Independence Utilities through public engagement and information.  This individual assumes responsibility for writing, maintaining, and monitoring content for the City of Independence Utilities website pages, providing regular content for all social media platforms, promoting educational events and programing for citizens and customers of the City of Independence Utilities while supporting the City’s Strategic Plan and Communication goals.  The ideal candidate will have experience in event planning, social media management and public education efforts.

This position will also support in the broadcast of live public meetings associated with the utilities.  This requires working nights, as necessary.  Some travel within the City is required to cover events, meetings and utilities facilities.  This is a 40-hour per week position which requires some weekends, evening and holidays as needed for various City events and activities.  Training will be provided as needed for candidates based on experience.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree preferred from an accredited college or university in Communication, Journalism, Marketing or Information Technology, or related field and at least one year of progressively responsible experience in Multimedia Communications or Information Technology or, Associates degree in Marketing or related field and two years of experience performing related duties; or, any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.  Must possess a valid driver’s license.  Must complete required NIMS level training within first six months of hire. 

Requires knowledge ofPrinciples, practices, and methods of public and media relations, writing, editing, page design, and layouts of publications both written and digital; basic principle of computer applications related to the work and of office procedures.  

Skill in:  Excellent command of the English language, including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary.

Ability to:  Maintain effective relations with media and online bloggers; deal courteously and diplomatically with public and online community; speak effectively before groups and respond to questions; navigate between buildings several miles apart and maintain a regular and reliable level of attendance and punctuality. 

Physical DemandsFrequently required to walk, sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; talk or hear; and lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. 

Working Conditions:  Work is performed in a normal office environment with some exposure to outdoor temperatures or dirt and dust.  Working conditions are typically moderately quiet.  The position may require working during evenings, weekends, and holidays to ensure operation efficiencies.
