The Public Information Assistant (Council) will assist the Mayor and City Council in their roles as elected officials for the community. The position will work on current issues occurring in the community, provide research and information assistance, and assist with other efforts on behalf of the office. The position works under close supervision of the Mayor and/or Council Members. Responsibilities may include duties as assigned by the mayor or individual city council member, including, but not limited to: General administrative tasks; answering and responding to constituent calls; staff support; providing research assistance on specific topics or projects; gathering requested information form city departments; attending city council and other city related meetings; and operating a motor vehicle to conduct City business. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: High School diploma; and two to three years of experience which involved interacting with the public to disseminate information; or any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Must possess a valid driver’s license, and have an excellent driving record and current motor vehicle insurance. Must complete required NIMS level training within first six months of hire. Typing proficiency of 45 wpm; will be asked to take a typing test if selected for an interview.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of general office procedures and computer applications related to work. Skilled in the operation and routine use of general office machines. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to use tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines; to research, compile, and summarize a variety of informational and statistical data and materials; to organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow up assignments with a minimum of direction; to use a computer to accurately and rapidly enter and retrieve data and information; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with citizens, city departments and others; and to work 40 hours a week, with a flexible schedule that may vary from week to week.
Physical Demands: Employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and to reach with hands and arms; to sit for extended periods of time; and to have hand dexterity to operate a personal computer and standard office equipment. Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
Working Conditions: Work is performed in a normal office environment with occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions, fumes or airborne particles when outside the office.
