Assistant WPC Plant Superintendent

Current opening is in the Wastewater Treatment Plant of the Water Pollution Control Department.  Assists the Plant Superintendent in monitoring and supervising the day-to-day operations of the wastewater treatment plant and personnel.  Plans, coordinates, assigns, and monitors performance and coaches, counsels, mentors, trains, and advises employees in department for the dual goals of meeting department goals and employee career development.  Acts as superior, in his/her absence, for temporary period of time.   Orders adjustments on various wastewater processes and the activated sludge plant to insure cost effectiveness and achieve the highest efficient removal of solids.  Oversees electrical and mechanical staff and maintenance activities.  Analyzes lab data and reports to determine adjustments required to process.  Attends and participates in staff meetings, completes required forms and paperwork.  Performs periodic inspections of plant site processes to insure efficient, safe and effective operations.  Maintains water pollution control standards in conjunction with all state and federal regulations.  Assists in developing and recommending the operating budget for the division annually. 

Minimum Qualifications:  Associates degree or Certificate from a technical school in wastewater treatment preferred; High School Diploma or GED; and four to six years of progressively responsible related experience; and four to six years of mechanical and maintenance experience with equipment repair/replacement related to pumps, motors, treatment plant and pump station equipment; or, any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.  Must possess a Valid Driver’s License, State Wastewater Class “A” Operator’s License, and a Hazardous Waste Site Operations License.  Must obtain CPR and Basic First Aid Certified within first six months of hire. Must complete required NIMS level training within first six months of hire.  Required to complete at least 5 contact hours of continuing education each calendar year. 

Knowledge of: principles and practices of wastewater treatment plant operations, equipment and processes; basic budgetary principles and practices; standard business arithmetic; administration of staff and activities; applicable state federal and local laws, rules and regulations; and computer applications related to the work.  Skilled in planning, organizing, assigning, directing, supervising, and reviewing and evaluating the work of staff.  Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. 

Physical Demands: Standing, walking, sitting, using hands to finger, handle, feel and reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  Ability to lift/move up to 25 lbs. and occasionally lift/move up to 50 lbs.
