Engineering Internship


The City of Independence Power & Light Engineering Department is currently recruiting for two(2) Engineering Interns.  This is a temporary position with a maximum of 40 hours per week, over a period of three months and does not have benefits.  Under general supervision, performs basic intern level engineering work related to the analysis and evaluation of Power & Light Production, Engineering and T&D projects.  Internships are less than 25% administrative tasks, and consist of information gathering, planning, design, writing projects and occasionally a special planning project.  These special projects are designed and completed by the intern with staff guidance.  This provides interns with a solid portfolio piece and experience in what planning and management looks like in a Power & Light organization.  Position will require some local travel to and from the City sites.

Minimum Qualifications: High School Graduate currently enrolled and taking a full load of courses in a recognized Engineering program; working toward a Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering field.  Past participation in a High School program related to Engineering type analysis or studies is a plus.  Valid Driver’s License required.  Letter of Recommendation from an Engineering Faculty Member from College attending.  Must complete required NIMS level training within first six months of hire.

Requires excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as the ability to research and apply analytical skills.  Knowledge of basic principles and applications of Algebra and Calculus.

Requires proficiency with computer software such as excel, word, data sorting and slide presentations.

Working Conditions:  Office environment, typically quiet, but will occasionally accompany staff to the field for visual inspection.
