Under general supervision, incumbent performs duties associated with population-based public health, assisting in disease prevention and control. Duties will incorporate the core public health functions in which to assess and monitor the community’s health and needs, formulate public policy, and assure access to care and evaluation of programs. Responsibilities include coordination and implementation of programs and policies to meet needs in the area of emergency preparedness and planning. Incumbent will assist with the duties related to communicable disease surveillance, as well as assist with coordination of the Antibiotic Stewardship Program. Will participate and/or lead activities to assure goals are achieved and grant deliverables are met. Will stay current on best practices and recommendations and recommend altering or implementing new programs accordingly. Duties include establishing and maintaining positive working relationships with various groups and leaders. Will maintain a healthy lifestyle, will operate city vehicle, and perform other related duties as needed.
*Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college in health science, health education, public health or closely related field, and; have three to five years of progressively responsible related experience with a minimum of one year in public health or related field.
*Will complete NIMS training within 6 months of hire.
*Valid driver’s license and professional certifications as appropriate.
*Should be skilled in record keeping, standard business math, and computer applications related to work responsibilities.
*Requires knowledge of City of Independence structure and community needs and applicable laws and regulations.
*Must be able to communicate effectively orally, in writing and deliver clear, effective public presentations with ability to respond to questions.
*Ability to conform to varied work schedule when needed, (i.e. weekends, emergencies, etc.) and be able to meet deadlines.
Physical Abilities: While performing essential functions of this position the employee is frequently exposed to infectious or contagious diseases, toxic or caustic chemicals and outdoor weather conditions. Working conditions are typically quiet.
