Salary: $10.13 - $17.73 per hour
Under general supervision, this position operates as the visitor center attendant for the Tourism Department. Answers telephone and responds to questions pertaining to the general operations of the Visitor Experience Center and tourism activities year round including weekends and holidays. Meets the general public and monitors various programs and activities. Opens and closes the Vaile Mansion on the weekends and holidays from April to October as scheduled. Leads guided tours, operates the registration desk, takes admission fees and answers customer calls and questions. Responsible for processing the day’s financial transactions from admissions and merchandise sales items and for opening/closing and balancing the cash register.
Minimum Qualification: High school diploma or equivalent. Six months experience with visitor center operations preferred; or, of progressively responsible related experience; or any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Must complete Certified Tourism Ambassador Training within first six months of hire. Must complete required NIMS level training within first six months of hire. Knowledge, Skills and Abilites: Able to learn, retain and relate historical information about the site and other attractions in Independence and surrounding area. Office administrative and clerical practices and procedures, such as operation of standard office equipment, including a computer, internet use and credit card machine. Standard business arithmetic, including percentages and decimals. Communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing. Ability to deal diplomatically and courteously with the public staff and volunteers. Physical Demands: Working conditions are in a moderately quiet office environment with a lot of interface with general public. Frequently required to stand for long periods of time, and required to climb stairs, and walk/maneuver throughout the historic site as needed.
Work Schedule: Hours and days of work vary. Must be able to work weekends and Holidays.
