Independence Police Department Investigating Shots Fired At Independence Mall on Monday, Sept. 5

The Independence Police Department (IPD) is currently investigating an incident regarding shots being fired at the Independence Center Mall around 3:00pm on Monday, Sept. 5. The call came in to dispatch around 3 p.m. from both an off-duty IPD officer and citizens. Callers reported that shots were being heard inside the mall. The Mall Management initiated their active shooter response protocol and ensured customers were safe as officers from IPD entered the building looking for the suspect and any victims. It was discovered that the suspect left the area before officers could get a description. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident. It appears that three shots were fired inside the mall. Stores were cleared one by one with IPD officers and Mall security staff. The investigation continues as Detectives work to put together information gathered from witnesses and security video. This incident does not appear to be an attempt at a mass casualty attack or active shooter event, but rather a disturbance between a few people that escalated into shots being fired.

"The City of Independence believes everyone has a right to safety in our community," City Manager Zach Walker said. "The City Council has taken aggressive steps in recent years to enhance safety at all commercial centers, including the Independence Center. IPD continues to work with Mall Management to identify and implement security solutions. Acts of violence such as those displayed on Monday are not welcome in our community, and we will continue to review our City Code for additional security enhancements while working with Independence Center management to discourage future incidents."
