The City of Independence is seeking a highly qualified and motivated employee to serve our City as an Administrative Assistant III in our Community Development Department.  Serves as support for the Regulated Industries Division to include accepting and entering Liquor License, Special Events and Catering Permits into CityWorks to route for outside department review; organizes, attends and facilitates liquor violation hearings and completes necessary paperwork for suspensions.  This position may assist other divisions within the department as needed.  This position will format and type letters, reports and other documents requiring special formatting, composes correspondence under general direction or on own initiative to expedite the processing and completion of work.  Interacts with staff from other departments and the general public in person or by telephone.



Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED; and three to four years of progressively responsible administrative experience which includes some experience interacting with high level officials and managers; or any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Must have a valid driver’s license. Must be able to complete NIMS training within six months of hire. Knowledge Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of office administrative practices and procedures such as business letter writing and operation of standard office equipment; computer usage and applications related to the work (including Microsoft office suite); record keeping, report preparation, filing methods, and records management techniques; basic principles of accounting, budget, and finance. Skill in communicating clearly and effectively with others, both orally and in writing; using tact, discretion, initiative, and independent judgment within established guidelines; organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines, and following up assignments with a minimum of direction; maintain records of financial transactions and activities. Ability to learn, adapt to, and document changing conditions in a concise and effective manner in a team environment. Physical Demands: Required to walk, sit, use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel objects, to reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Typical Working Conditions: A normal office environment.
