Laboratory Technician

$20.24 - $30.37/hr

This position is located in the Water department. Under general supervision, performs work in a field and/or laboratory setting involving collecting and conducting tests on water samples in order to determine chemical properties and composition. Other responsibilities include properly recording and summarizing results; preparing media, solutions and reagents for various testing procedures; analyzing water samples for a variety of chemicals, properties or effluents, such as pH, turbidity, chlorine hardness, alkalinity, suspended solids, metals, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, settleability factor, phenols, oil and grease, and other properties; operating and calibrating various laboratory equipment to conduct appropriate tests and analyses; maintaining bench sheets and computer records; completing Environmental Resource Assurance and Environmental Protection Agency assays on appropriate tests to ensure that methods are within federal guidelines; compiles and records data on laboratory test and completes reports as appropriate; performs quality control procedures on laboratory tests and equipment as appropriate; responds to customers and the general public regarding water quality complaints; performs special projects related to laboratory activities as assigned. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology or a related field; at least 6 months of responsible, related work experience preferred. Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Must complete required NIMS level training within first six months of hire.

Knowledge of: Principles and practices of chemistry and microbiology; laboratory testing techniques, protocols and practices; recordkeeping, report preparation, and filing methods; applicable state, federal and local laws, rules and regulations; computer usage and applications related to the work; laboratory safety procedures  Skill in: Conducting laboratory tests on water samples; performing mathematical and algebraic computations; communicating clearly and effectively, orally and in writing; operating and calibrating laboratory equipment.

Ability to: read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, procedures manuals; write routine reports and correspondence; deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations; interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form; define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

Physical Demands: frequently required to stand, walk, sit, climb stairs and ladders, negotiate stairs and ramps, bend, stoop, squat, work from high platforms, use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear, and lift and/or move up to approximately 35 pounds.  Normal hearing, eye-hand coordination and visual acuity is required along with the ability to see close up and to distinguish color.

Typical Working Conditions: frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions and risk of electrical shock.

This position will be required to work some weekends and holidays.
