Laboratory Supervisor

Provides operational and administrative supervision to the Water Department laboratory facilities.  Establishes and maintains lab records, reports, and procedures.  Initiates, directs, and performs special studies and sampling programs.  Responsible for calibration and maintenance of lab equipment.  Assists in budget preparation, coordinates work schedules and assists in public relations, conducting tours and training sessions.  Performs water quality analysis and related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:  Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry, biology or related field.  MS preferred.  Experience in water plant operation or formal training desired.  Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.   Must possess a valid Driver’s license.  Must be able to complete required NIMS level training within six (6) months.

Knowledge of: Principals and practices of biology and chemistry, management, administration, and supervision; laboratory sampling, testing, and analysis procedures; applicable Federal and State environmental laws and regulations; administrative practices, procedures, and policies; safety practices and precautions in a laboratory setting; computer applications related to the work.

Skill In: Communicating clearly and effectively with a variety of people, both orally and in writing; perform laboratory testing procedures and analyses; prepare clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written materials; using computers to enter and retrieve information; using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgement within established guidelines; researching, compiling and summarizing a variety of informational and statistical data and materials; organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines, and following up assignments with a minimum of direction; planning, organizing, assigning, directing, reviewing and evaluation the work of staff.

Physical Demands:  Ability to climb stairs, ladders, carry test equipment, and perform normal tasks associated with water treatment plant operations.

Working Conditions:  Normal office environment and field conditions of extreme heat and cold.  Frequent exposure to toxic chemicals.  Occasional weekend work may be required.
