Plans, directs, manages, coordinates, and supervises all aspects of the City-owned historic sites and the National Frontier Trails Museum. Oversees the day-to-day operations for the Museum and historic sites and serves as primary contact for all aspects of historic sites and museum operations. Should become familiar with the City’s history, culture, collections management, museum & historical site operations, educational & public programming base, target market, support groups and overall potential. Develops and recommends annual operating budget for historic sites and the museum. Prepares applications for and administers grant programs to help implement various historic sites & museum projects. Serves as liaison between the City of Independence and the various stakeholder groups for the City owned historic sites and the Friends of the National Frontier Trails Museum and attends stakeholder group meetings. Represents historic sites and the National Frontier Trails Museum at Tourism Commission meetings.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university (Masters. preferred) in business, administration, museum studies, or a related field; and four to six years of progressively responsible experience in management, operations, historic site management; or any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Must have a valid state driver’s license.  Must be able to complete NIMS training within six (6) months of hire.  Knowledge Skills and AbilitiesPrinciples and practices of administration and supervision; ability to plan and organize, schedule, assign, train, and evaluate the work of staff, volunteers, interns, and others. Working knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of budget and grant preparation and management; and experience preparing grants and budgets. Excellent language skills; including spelling; grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary; Able to communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively both orally and in writing with a broad range of individuals including staff, donors, volunteers, children, vendors, and peer institutions. Administration of staff, either directly or through subordinate supervision. Organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines, and following up assignments with a minimum of direction. Planning, organizing assigning, directing, reviewing, and evaluating work of staff. Skill in applying logical thinking to solve problems or accomplish tasks; to understand, interpret and communicated complicated policies, procedures, and protocols. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Preparing clear and concise reports, correspondence, and other written materials. Ability to read, interpret and develop documents. Ability to write reports and correspondence. Ability to interpret and/or develop a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to make effective oral presentations before groups of people and respond to questions. Demonstrated ability to organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow up assignments with a minimum of direction. Ability to pay attention to detail. Ability to organize complex projects and work independently. Physical Demands:  While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; bend body and legs; move about on hands and knees, use hands, arms, and fingers to reach, handle, seize, hold, grasp or turn objects and is often required to lift and/or move more than 10 lbs.  Typical Working Conditions:  Work will be performed both indoors and outdoors and the employee may be subject to extremes in temperatures and other weather conditions. While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to conditions such as fumes, noxious odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation, and to possible bodily injury from toxic or caustic chemicals, falling from high exposed places, electrical shock, or from moving mechanical parts of equipment, tools, or machinery. The incumbent’s working conditions will range from moderately quiet to very loud.
