Under general supervision, performs duties associated with population-based public health in order to assist in building a healthier Independence. Work is associated with the three core public health functions:
• Assessment and monitoring of the health of communities and populations at risk.
• Formulating public policies, in collaboration with community and government leaders, designed to solve identified local health problems and priorities.
• Assuring that all populations have access to appropriate and cost-effective care, including health promotion and disease prevention services, and evaluation of the effectiveness of that care.
Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in nursing, nutrition, health science, health education, public health or closely related field. Three to five years of progressively responsible related experience in public health, nutrition, nursing, or a related field preferred. Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.Must complete required NIMS training within first six months of hire. Valid driver’s license required. Should be skilled in record keeping, standard business math, and computer applications related to work responsibilities. Requires knowledge of City of Independence structure and community needs and applicable laws and regulations. Must be able to communicate effectively orally, in writing and deliver clear, effective public presentations with ability to respond to questions. Ability to conform to varied work schedule when appropriate, (i.e. weekends, emergencies, etc.) and be able to meet deadlines. Physical Abilities: While performing essential functions of this position the employee is frequently exposed to infectious or contagious diseases, toxic or caustic chemicals and outdoor weather conditions. Working conditions are typically quiet.
