Engineering Technician II

*$20.24 - $30.37 hourly rate

The City of Independence is seeking highly-motivated, solution-oriented individuals to join the Public Works Engineering Team. As a member of the Public Works team, the Engineering Technician II will be part of a culture of innovation, initiative, and collaboration. Using the City’s Strategic Plan as a guiding principle, this position will give the opportunity to showcase expertise and ingenuity. Currently two positions are available as an Engineering Technician II; the first will join the Right-of-Way team, assisting the management of the City’s Right-of-Way, including permitting, inspection, response to citizens, and coordination of a variety of right-of-way activities. The second position will join the Design team, assisting in the development and review of plans and drawings, administration of construction activities, and administration of development activities. Candidates should demonstrate interest in growing skills, knowledge, and career, and must be detail-oriented with multi-tasking capabilities in a fast-paced environment. Excellent customer service skills, including the ability to communicate tactfully with the public. The ideal candidates are solution-focused, diligent, driven to action, and take pride in their work. Will perform other related duties as assigned as applicable to Public Works Department. May be required to work 12-hr. shifts during snow removal. AutoCAD experience preferred. CDL preferred.

Minimum QualificationsHigh school diploma or equivalent and three years of progressively responsible related experience, or any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Requires a valid Missouri driver’s license. Must complete required NIMS level training within first six months of hire. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of principles, practices and standards of engineering and/or construction. Skill in applying mathematical concepts and principles.  Skill and ability in recordkeeping, report preparation, filing, computer applications related to work including data input into Cityworks data management system, and general office practices. Ability to read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and local laws, rules and regulations. Physical Demands:  Hand dexterity to operate personal computer and other equipment related to job. While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; use of hands to handle, finger, or feel, and to reach with hands and arms. May lift up to 25 lbs. Typical Working Conditions: Working conditions are in both office environment and outdoor weather conditions.

*Salary offer will be dependent upon candidate qualifications, internal pay equity, and market rate of pay. Entry level offer will not exceed the midpoint of the range except for exceptional circumstances and qualifications.
