The City of Independence is seeking a highly qualified and motivated employee to serve our City as a full-time Staff Assistant in our Public Works Department. As a member of the Public Works team, the Staff Assistant will be a part of culture of innovation, initiative, and collaboration. Using the City’s Strategic Plan as a guiding principle, this position will give the opportunity to showcase expertise and ingenuity. Under direct supervision of the Public Works Director, this position will provide administrative and technical assistance to support work for management in the Public Works Department. The position performs a variety of staff functions including budget preparation, allocation of expenditures, personnel, and/or purchasing or contract monitoring, public information, department data processing coordination, and/or special project coordination. Gathers records, reports, correspondence or other specific types of information that may be required, analyzes data collected, and prepares comprehensive reports. This position will serve a critical role as the Public Works Department works toward attaining department accreditation, including the development and maintenance of comprehensive policies, procedures, programs, training, safety, and reporting. The position performs other duties as assigned including winter weather and emergency operations.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a four-year college or university in business or public administration or a related field. Two to three years of progressively responsible related experience. Any combination of education, training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Must complete required NIMS level training within first six months of hire. Knowledge of: Federal, state and local laws and ordinances related to the area of assignment; principles and practices of management and administration; computer usage and applications related to the work; record keeping, report preparation, filing methods, and records management techniques; accounting and finance. Skill in: Communicating clearly and effectively with others, both orally and in writing; using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines; organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines, and following up assignments with a minimum of direction; maintain records of financial transactions and activities. Learn, adapt to, and document changing conditions in a concise and effective manner in a team environment. Typical Working Conditions: Conditions are typically moderately quiet.
