Purpose:  To establish an eligibility list for Police Detention Officer.

Position Summary:  Processes individuals into the Independence Police Detention facility.  Responsible for intake of personal belongings; booking; fingerprinting and searching of detainees/prisoners; completes medical questionnaires. Monitor the detention area to provide safety and security for arrestees.  Coordinates the bonding and/or arraignment of detainees with Municipal/ State/ Federal Court; provides courts with proper documentation.  Arranges meals and makes provisions for personal needs of prisoners. Maintains the detention facility; cleans cells; laundry; and supplies.  Perform data entry of required records and reports.  Inform the Detective Unit of felony arrests and arraignments and other duties as directed.

Minimum Qualifications:  High school diploma or GED, or any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.  Aptitude in record keeping, report preparation, computer applications and effective communication is desired.   Must complete required NIMS level training within first six months of hire and complete certification in CPR, First Aid, AED and LVNR within three years.  Knowledge of applicable detention laws as well as ability to maintain order and security within the detention unit preferred.

Tattoo Policy:  Tattoos, body art, or brands that are extremist, indecent, sexist, racist, offensive, or inappropriate for the law enforcement community are prohibited, regardless of location on the body. The final decision on the interpretation of a tattoo is determined by the Chief. An employee shall not have any tattoos, body art, or branding on the head, face, neck, scalp, or hands, unless authorized by the Chief because of special circumstances. While on-duty, excessive tattooing, body art, or brandings shall not be exposed or visible (including through the uniform). "Excessive" is defined as any tattoo, body art, or branding that exceeds one third of the exposed body part.

Physical Demands: Stairs, walking, infrequent running, occasional lifting or moving and physical strength to restrain abusive and violent individuals.  Hand dexterity to operate a computer.

Typical Working Conditions:   Occasional exposure to hazardous situations involving armed or physically violent persons.  Minimal exposure to extreme weather conditions of heat and cold.  Contact with toxic or caustic cleaning chemicals.

Must be available for shift work; weekend work.

Comprehensive background check

Lift and drag test (Approximately 165 lbs. for 100 feet)
