Sign & Marking Technician

$17.80 per hour

Performs skilled design, assembly, installation, and maintenance of all non-mechanical traffic control devices according to the Federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and City ordinances. Performs surveys and reads blueprints in preparation of sign layout and installation.  Available for emergency services during non-business hours and performs snow removal as needed.  Maintains required records and reports and prepares status reports in Cityworks data management system.

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED; three to four years of progressively responsible related experience in construction and maintenance; one year of experience in the fabrication of traffic signs and installation and maintenance of traffic signs and pavement markings preferred; and 21 years of age. Within one year of appointment, obtain International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) certifications for Work Zone Traffic Safety and Signs and Markings Level I.  Must have or be able to obtain Class A CDL with air brake endorsement, without ‘K’ restriction within six months of hire.  Must also obtain Flagger certification and complete required NIMS training within first six months of hire.  Knowledge of proper use of tools, materials, safety hazards and precautions used in various construction trades; MUTCD Manual and applicable City ordinances. 

Physical Demands: Regularly required to lift, move or carry objects up to 75 pounds; ascend or descend ladders, stairs, and the like, using feet and legs or hands and arms; maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching on narrow, slippery surfaces; bend body downward and forward by bending spine and legs; move about on hands and knees or hands and feet; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects; and reach with hands and arms. Frequently required to lift &/or move objects up to 75 pounds, plus or minus 25 pounds.  May be required to stand, sit, crouch, or bend for extended periods. Must have visual acuity and hand dexterity to operate various equipment for the job. 

Typical Working Conditions: Regularly exposed to possible bodily injury from moving mechanical parts of equipment, tools, machinery and paint fumes; noise from various equipment and hand tools or extended periods; outdoor conditions including extreme heat and cold.
