Under limited supervision, performs large, major and highly complicated engineering designs and is assigned those large, major and highly complicated projects for Power & Light Department’s substation and transmission’s electrical system. Position is seen as a senior level position with exceptional skills and qualifications in the field of electric power substation and transmission system engineering. Position is in a lead role and as such operates as the senior project manager of capital and system improvement projects. Position assists as a teacher for lower level engineering positions. This is a very high level technical engineering position.
This position may also be filled at an Engineer II or Engineer III level.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from an ABET accredited college or university in the field of power electrical engineering with specialized education in power system engineering is required (BSEE). Master’s Degree in Engineering is desirable. A valid certificate in Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) is required. Registration as a professional engineer (PE) is highly desirable. If registered PE in a state other than Missouri, secure a state of Missouri registration within the first six months of employment is desirable. Minimum of ten (10) years general engineering or power systems engineering is required; or, minimum of eight (8) years’ general engineering or power systems engineering experience with either a Master’s Degree in same functional area or a PE. Experience in municipal systems operation design and maintenance is preferred. Knowledge of power systems protection engineering and protection equipment for generation, substation and transmission is preferred. Position requires in lieu of above a combination of education, training and experience commensurate with the skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Must complete required NIMS level training within first six months of hire. Valid driver’s license required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of the principles, practices and advanced theories of electrical power substation and transmission engineering, and project management and administration. Knowledge of National Electricity Safety Code and National Electric Code. Skill in mentoring lower level engineers, coordinating projects to meet established deadlines and time frames. Ability to read and understand substation and transmission system plans and specifications. Able to supervise consulting engineers and construction contractors. Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Physical Demands: Occasionally exposed to possible bodily injury from moving mechanical parts of machinery, and electrical shock. Regularly required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds; reach with hands and arms; and use hands to finger, handle or feel.
