Under limited supervision, design, install, maintain and document protective relay and control systems and settings which will ensure the efficient, safe, and reliable operation of the Independence Power & Light (IPL) generation and transmission networks. Provide technical support in power system operations and maintenance of equipment that affects the operation of IPL. Develop IPL system protection programs and budgets for 5 and 10 years. Act as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for various NERC CIPS and reliability standards. Position reports to the Engineering Supervisor. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from an ABET accredited college or university in Electrical Engineering with specialized education in power system engineering is required. Master’s Degree in Engineering is desirable. A valid certificate in Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) is required. Registration as a professional engineer (PE) is highly desirable. If a Registered PE in a state other than Missouri, secure a state of Missouri registration within the first six months of employment is desirable. Minimum of ten years general engineering or power systems engineering is required, or minimum of eight years’ general engineering or power systems engineering experience with either a Master’s Degree in same functional area or a PE. Experience in municipal electric system operation design and maintenance is preferred. Knowledge of power systems protection engineering and protection equipment for generation, substation and transmission is preferred. In lieu of above, a combination of education, training and experience commensurate with the skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Valid Driver’s License required. Must complete required NIMS level training within first six months of hire.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of principles and theories of electrical power engineering and National Electrical Safety Code. Requires thorough knowledge of protection schemes related to generation, transmission and substation facilities. Must be knowledgeable of maintenance requirements and specifications for various manufacturers’ substation and transmission protection equipment. Requires knowledge of NERC Standards related to protection and operation of generation, substation and transmission systems and other applicable state, federal and local regulations. Must possess advanced mathematical computer and software skills. Requires organizational skills, ability to prioritize and meet critical deadlines. Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, reflecting discretion and tact. Requires ability to conduct applicable research and report findings in a clear and concise format. Ability to effectively lead in critical situations and make operational decisions quickly based on engineering fundamentals and operating policies during high activity.
Physical Demands: Regularly required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
Working Conditions: Both indoor and outdoor; outdoor work may be required at a moment’s notice in all types of weather. May require work beyond normal working hours and will be subject to on-call status.
