The City of Independence is actively seeking a City Counselor who will direct, supervise, and coordinate the administrative and professional legal work for the City. This is an active, working supervisor position of the Law Department. The City Counselor will provide legal advice, guidance and representation to the City Council, City Management, all City department staff, boards and agencies of the City, including the oversight of the City’s Workers’ Compensation program. Attendance of City Council and other board and agency meetings required, as well as the representation of the City at various functions such as delivering speeches at civic and business associates, meeting with influential community persons, and representatives of the press. The City Counselor will perform other related duties as assigned.

*Juris Doctorate with ten years of progressively responsible experience, including municipal government legal experience and management of staff.
*Strong land use background and experience coordinating/directing outside counsel services.
*Strong oral and written communication skills and discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.
*Experience with municipal utilities helpful but not required.
*Must have good organizational skills, ability to prioritize, meet deadlines and complete assignments with a minimum of direction.
*Requires ability to effectively speak before public groups and respond to questions.
*License to practice law in the state of Missouri (within 6 months of hire) and Federal Court.
*Valid driver’s license

Typical Working Conditions: Work is performed in an office environment, conditions are typically moderately quiet. While performing essential functions of this job the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and talk or hear.
