Engineer I

The City of Independence is seeking a highly qualified and enthusiastic employee to serve our City as a full-time Engineer I in our Public Works Department. As a member of the Public Works team, the Engineer I will be a part of culture of innovation, initiative, and collaboration. Using the City’s Strategic Plan as a guiding principle, this position will give the opportunity to showcase expertise and ingenuity. Under direct supervision, this position will provide technical assistance in developing design reports, construction plans and specifications, evaluation of field conditions, investigation of citizen concerns related to capital projects and general inquiries, and construction inspection and administration. The position will work directly with talented engineering professionals who are team-oriented and willing to mentor. The position will support higher-level engineers on large, complex projects and may act as a project case engineer on assigned projects. The position will work closely with internal groups to coordinate activities. Candidates should have a strong background in AutoCAD; the position will also use GIS, Cityworks, electronic plan review software, and survey equipment. Familiarity with APWA standards and MoDOT LPA requirements is preferred. Design work will primarily include the development of plans and specifications for site design, storm, sanitary and transportation. Public meetings and other duties may occasionally occur outside of normal business hours. The ideal candidate will support the City by assisting in the planning, design and construction of a wide variety of municipal projects, and have exceptional technical skills, along with a strong desire to provide superior service to both internal and external customers. Candidates should demonstrate interest in growing skills, knowledge and career. The candidate must also have outstanding organizational and time management skills, and be detail-oriented with multi-tasking capabilities in a fast-paced environment. Excellent customer service skills, including the ability to communicate tactfully with the public are required. The ideal candidate will be a solution-focused, diligent, and driven to action individual who assumes responsibility and takes pride in their work.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor of Science from a four-year college or university in civil engineering or a closely related field from an accredited institution of higher education and official transcripts or any combination of education, training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position will be required at the time of hire. EIT preferred. Requires knowledge of theory and practices of civil engineering; principles of surveying; construction methods, standards and specifications; Federal, state, and local laws and ordinances related to area of assignment; computer usage and applications related to work including Cityworks, AutoCAD, GIS, and electronic plan review software; Must be skilled in communicating clearly and effectively with others, both orally and in writing; using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment; and organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines.  Requires a valid state driver’s license.  Must complete NIMS and LPA training within first six months of hire.

Typical Working Conditions: Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions and mechanical equipment.  Frequent work in office setting.  Outdoor work may be loud.
