Performs routine construction work and/or maintenance duties within the Public Works Department/Street Maintenance Division. Shovels or rakes asphalt, sets concrete forms and aids in finishing concrete. Hauls material, operates snow removal equipment and small equipment, i.e. air compressors, jack hammers, concrete saws, pumps or compactors. Receives training in the operation of light and heavy equipment and performs related duties. May be required to do daily log sheets and reports.
Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and one year of progressively responsible related experience in general labor and equipment operation. Must possess a Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes or if selected for position, obtain Class “ A” Commercial Driver’s License permit prior to first day of employment (if a permit is obtained, the selected candidate must obtain the Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes within the first six months of hire). Must have or be able to obtain Work Zone Training and Flagger Certification with six month of hire. Knowledge of proper use of hand tools, city streets, and common safety hazards and practices.
Physical Demands: Must be able to stoop, crawl, crouch, reach overhead, negotiate stairs and ramps, climb ladders, bend and lift up to 45 lbs. plus or minus 25 lbs. Must be able to stand and walk distances on hard floor surfaces and maintain balance on uneven surfaces and in elevated situations.
Typical Working Conditions: Outdoor conditions of extreme heat and cold and adverse weather. Regularly exposed to possible bodily injury from moving mechanical parts of equipment, tools and machinery and exposed to noise from various hand tools for extended periods of time. May be called in after normal hours in emergency conditions. Hours of work: 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM.
