Permits & Zoning Technician

$16.72 - $25.09 per hour

Under general supervision, this position will respond to and investigate complaints from citizens regarding zoning violations; notify property owners of zoning violations and ensure appropriate follow up of complaints.  Assists in reviewing building permit applications and issuing building and construction permits in the Community Development department; maintain all required records; and assist all field inspection personnel as required.  Provides customer service to walk-in customers.  Performs related duties.|

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED; and one to two years of progressively responsible related experience with effective customer service skills; or any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.  ICC Certification related to Permits Technician required or ability to obtain within 18 months from date of employment.  Missouri Notary or ability to obtain notary within 3 months and maintain ongoing active status.  Valid driver’s license required, supplemented with a good driving record.  Must be able to complete NIMS training within six (6) months of hire.    Knowledge of building and construction codes, ordinances, methods and processes.  Correct English usage, including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary.  Computer applications related to the work.  Skill in using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.  Demonstrated highly effective customer service and interpersonal skills.   Able to read and interpret blue prints and construction documents. 

Physical  Abilities:  Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, talk or hear, and lift and/or move up to 10 pounds; occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.   

Typical Working Conditions:  Work is performed in a normal office and in the field with occasional exposure to fumes or airborne particles.  Working conditions are typically moderately quiet.
