Professional and technical position requiring an individual with excellent communication and organizational skills, able to perform required job duties and make sound judgements with minimal oversight. This position is responsible for enforcing City codes regarding the keeping and caring for animals within City limits to promote the health, safety and welfare of both people and animals. The qualified applicant will have the ability to work independently and in a team setting in a fast-paced environment.
Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent, and one to two years of progressively responsible related experience, or any combination of education, training and experience providing the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential job functions. Must complete required NIMS level training within the first six months of hire. Valid driver’s license required. Knowledge of animal health, care, behavior and handling. Ability to use independent judgement within established guidelines, communicate effectively and handle and resolve conflict in a calm and effective manner. Ability to conduct thorough investigations with attention to detail and to prepare written reports with sufficient detail to give an accurate reflection of events that occurred. Ability to multitask, prioritize and manage time efficiently.
Physical Demands: Frequent mobility required including lifting, bending, kneeling, and reaching; maneuvering on uneven terrain. Normal hearing and visual acuity. Sitting or standing for extended periods. Able to regularly lift 75 pounds and able to handle and control fractious, aggressive and dangerous animals.
Typical Working Conditions: Frequent exposure to difficult public contacts. Frequent exposure to all weather conditions and potentially caustic chemicals. Possible exposure to hazardous work areas and to personal physical danger in course of conducting job duties. Assignments may involve frequent exposure to dirty or unsanitary conditions, odors, fumes and zoonotic diseases.
Drug testing. Background check. Valid driver’s license. In addition to the application, testing and/or examinations may be required for further consideration on this position.
This position may be required to work evening hours and one weekend day per week.
This position will be required to rotate on-call to provide after-hours animal control services.
