This is an entry level position with a starting salary of $17.21 per hour.  Responsible for performing physical, chemical and bacteriological analysis of water, wastewater and sludge for the determination of treatment process efficiencies and compliance with state and federal regulations for wastewater treatment. Responsible for the proper collection and preservation of samples, preparation of media, solutions and reagents, and the analysis of constituents and properties such as pH, dissolved oxygen, BOD, COD, suspended and total solids, metals, phenols, and oil and grease. Operates, maintains and calibrates various laboratory equipment for the appropriate testing of samples. Maintains Chain of Custody and analytical bench sheets for record compliance and compiles and records laboratory data for reports.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology or a related field; and two to three years experience in a laboratory or related field; or, an appropriate combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.  Must possess a valid driver’s license.  Must complete required NIMS level training within first six months of hire.  Knowledge of principles and practices of biology and chemistry; laboratory sampling, testing and analysis procedures.  Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with customers, vendors and other departmental personnel.  Skilled in the operation of a personal computer.

Physical Demands: Sitting and standing for extended periods of time.  Climbing stairs and ladders; carrying testing equipment.  Using hands to finger, handle or feel; reaching with hands and arms.  Lifting and/or moving up to 20 lbs.  Hand dexterity to operate a personal computer. 

Typical Working Conditions: Possible exposure to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, possible bodily injury from moving mechanical parts, tools, or machinery, radiation, and risk of electrical shock.
