This is a part-time temporary position within the City of Independence Health Department/Environmental Public Health Division, primarily responsible for conducting regulatory inspections of temporary food service events to determine compliance with Food Safety and Sanitation Codes. Prepares reports to record inspection results at temporary food service events and provides food safety and sanitation information at temporary food service events and other duties as assigned. The primary hours for this position are nights and weekends.
Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent; Bachelor’s degree in Science, Biology, Chemistry, Public or Environmental Health, with a minimum of 30 hours in science preferred, plus two years experience in public health; or, an appropriate combination of education, training and experience. Knowledge of codes and regulations as they apply to food and institutions. Ability to communicate effectively and maintain composure when dealing with difficult customers. Ability to work independently with very little oversight. Skilled in computer applications related to the work and preparing detailed reports. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Must complete required NIMS level training within first 6 months of hire.
Physical Demands: Lifting up to 20 lbs., balancing, kneeling, stooping, crouching, reaching, and maneuvering uneven terrain to perform routine inspections. Hand dexterity to operate a personal computer. Sitting for extended periods of time. Extended periods of driving.
Typical Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Outside conditions of extreme heat and cold and adverse weather. May be required to respond to emergencies after normal working hours.
