Building Inspector

$3,178 - $5,586 per month

Reviews construction plans to insure that all aspects of proposed projects are in compliance with applicable City codes. Interprets and enforces the Building Codes which may include: plumbing, electrical, heating and cooling, and fire codes. Inspects all new residential/commercial construction, remodels, repairs and swimming pools to insure structural integrity and compliance with the Code. Answers inquiries from the Public and Contractors regarding construction compliance. Meets with the Public concerning any construction problems and reports results to Superior. Performs other related duties.

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent and two to three years related experience; or any combination of education, training, and experience to perform the essential functions of the job. Require the ICC Building Inspector Certification or be able to obtain this certification within 36 months after acceptance of position. Valid Driver’s license. Must be able to complete required NIMS level training within six (6) months. KNOWLEDGE OF: Methods, practices, and techniques of construction; construction materials and equipment; principles and practices related to computer applications related to work. SKILL IN: Communicating clearly and effectively orally and in writing; preparing and presenting reports; and performing visual inspections of construction sites. Have a basic knowledge of the streets and numbering system of Independence preferred. Must possess the ability to enter and retrieve information into the computer system. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to read construction plans and specifications. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close and depth vision. WORKING CONDITIONS: Regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, possible bodily injury from explosions, toxic or caustic chemicals, and moving mechanical parts of equipment, tools, or machinery. Typically loud work environment.
