POSITION SUMMARY: Operates and coordinates combined radio communications for fire and animal control. Duties include operation of 9-1-1, computer-aided dispatch, NCIC/NLETS/MULES/REJIS systems, monitors alarm panels and causes response of police as required, monitors and operates point-to-point and mutual aid radio communication as necessary, monitors and operates NAWAS and emergency preparedness weather warning sirens, TDD-TTY (hearing impaired phone), and 24-hour recorder as required. Maintains all procedures, manuals, directories, maps, and performs related duties. Must be able to multi-task and react to high stress situations.
Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of each of the following selection criteria is required to proceed through the selection process. Applicants must pass each phase of the selection criteria to proceed to the next phase. Selection Criteria includes: 30 minute observation session in the 9-1-1 call center, submission of a completed background check packet (background investigation), and passing a written examination (testing time is approximately 3 hours). Applicants selected to advance to the written exam will be notified via mail or phone of the testing date, time and location. The final part of the selection process includes an oral board (interview), polygraph, psychological examination, hearing test and drug screening. Applicants must be able to maintain effective interpersonal relationships. Required Licenses: REJIS Certification and MULES Full Certification must be obtained within six months of hire. Must type 35 wpm; will be asked to take a typing test if selected for an interview. Must complete required NIMS level training within first six months of hire.
Typical Physical Demands: Must be able to sit for extended periods of time. Must be able to stoop, bend and reach for files and shelves. Visual ability sufficient to read and write reports, correspondence, etc. Hearing ability sufficient to understand radio transmissions, conversations with other individuals, both in person and over a telephone. Speaking ability sufficient to communicate effectively with other individuals in person, over a telephone or over a radio. Prolonged periods of emotionally stressful activity requiring the handling of multiple tasks simultaneously.
Typical working conditions: Work is performed inside, sitting at radio console in a confined area with several employees at a time. May be assigned to work weekends, holidays, day, evening or midnight shift.
Testing: Written/computer exam, drug screening, hearing test. In addition to the application, testing and/or examinations may be required for further consideration on this position.
This is a Communications Workers of America bargaining unit position.
MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR SHIFT WORK – 6:45 A.M. – 2:45 P.M., 2:45 P.M.- 10:45 P.M., 5:00 P.M. – 3:00 A.M., 10:45 P.M. – 6:45 A.M., WEEKEND WORK, ROTATING DAYS OFF EVERY 14 AND/OR 28 DAYS.
