(INDEPENDENCE, MO)  Monday, April 20, 2020 - Applications from not-for-profit groups for the sale of consumer grade, or Division 1.4G, fireworks will be accepted by appointment only by the Community Development Department between 8 a.m. Monday, May 18, 2020 and 5 p.m. Friday, May 22, 2020. No early or late applications will be accepted.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic all applicants must call or email to make an appointment to drop off their applications during that week.  Please call 325-7183 or email to make an appointment. 

Interested not-for-profit groups who perform community service work within Independence can visit and download a fireworks license application to apply. The Community Development Department is located on the second floor of City Hall at 111 E. Maple Ave.

Included in the materials are directions for applying, the rules and regulations regarding the sale, and use of fireworks.  Applications must include a site plan and security plan. There is a $400 non-refundable fee for each fireworks application received and must be paid at the time of application.

City Code allows anyone 16 and older to use and/or possess consumer grade fireworks between the hours of 10 a.m. and 11 p.m. from July 3, 2020 to July 5, 2020.  Not-for-profit organizations may be licensed for authority to sell fireworks within the city limits from 10 a.m. June 23, 2020 to noon on July 5, 2020.

Not-for-profit organizations are allowed only one license.  

It is illegal for any person in Independence to possess, store, handle, or use:

  • Sparkler bombs;
  • Altered or combined fireworks: or
  • “Sky Lanterns”, which are small hot air balloons commonly made of paper or other combustible material with an opening at the bottom where a small fire is suspended and are sometimes known as Chinese lanterns, Kongming lanterns and sky candles. For purposes of this section “Sky Lanterns” shall not include hot air balloons piloted by human beings, devices designed to loft scientific payloads (weather balloons) or any lantern that is tethered so as to not become free floating.
