The City of Independence hosts an annual EcoFest. The June festival provides an opportunity for children and adults to see displays with an environmental theme.
Exhibitors provide information about the importance of water quality, local watersheds, stormwater management, and conservation. There are games, contests, interactive information booths, and entertainment.

- Electronic Recycling Events
A huge success held annually in April, citizens are able to safely dispose many electronic devices. Over the past five years 120 tons of materials have been collected and properly disposed of or recycled. The City is happy to announce our sponsor vendor MRC will, a recycling firm based out of St. Louis, is returning to host this years event. In addition beginning May 1st, 2013 electronic good will be collected by MRC year round at our two drop off facilities located at 865 Vista and 13600 E 35th Street.

The park has many nature programs for people of all ages, including the Itty Bitty Campout, Late Night Fishing Nights, Leave no Trace, Weed Warriors, and Nature Story Time.
This Program provides the environmentally responsible alternative to hazardous wastes being poured down drains or onto the ground. Proper disposal of household hazardous wastes makes homes safer and reduces health risks.
A free mobile collection is held annually in Independence for residents once a year. The mobile collection has become very popular with residents.Water Pollution Control is proud to sponsor the event as part of its effort to protect the environment.

America Recycles Day (ARD), November 15, is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to encouraging Americans to recycle and to buy recycled products.

Keep America Beautiful's Great American Cleanup, the nation's largest community improvement program, takes place annually from March 1 through May 31, involving an estimated 3 million volunteers and attendees.
The hardworking volunteers donated more than 5.2 million hours in 2009 to clean, beautify and improve more than 32,000 communities during more than 30,000 events in all 50 states and beyond.
Activities included beautifying parks and recreation areas, cleaning seashores and waterways, handling recycling collections, picking up litter, planting trees and flowers, and conducting educational programs and litter-free events.
