City of Independence, Missouri

Municipal elections moved to June 2

This morning, Governor Parson signed Executive Order 20-03 ordering all Missouri municipal elections previously scheduled for April 7, 2020, to be postponed to June 2, 2020. This will impact the planned municipal election for the four district Council seats.

“With this decision our current council members will serve through the June 2 election and until the June 15 Council Meeting,” Mayor Eileen Weir said. “We will continue to conduct the necessary business of the City and are working on the changes the public will see to these meetings in the coming weeks. This is a situation unlike any we have ever seen before and we continue to learn new things every hour. We understand everyone’s concern with these changes and urge your patience as we continue to shift services to meet the rapidly changing situation we are living in at this time.”

As outlined in the Missouri State Constitution (VII Section 12) and Independence City Charter (Section 6.5) District Councilmembers shall serve until successors are elected and qualified.
