GPS/GIS Asset Inventory
January 10, 2007
Using GPS (Global Positioning System) and GIS (Geographic Information System) hardware and software, all sanitary and storm sewer lines, manholes, and structures will be inventoried this year. Nine interns will be added to existing staff to accomplish this task. GIS technology creates a data base which allows collected information to be linked to location data, such as an address or sewer map. GPS technology uses satellite technology to pinpoint exact locations. The collected data will be layered to show how everything works and to tie the system together, showing a network of pipes and connecting structures.
Some of the sewer lines and structures under the streets in our neighborhoods are getting older - some exceeding 100 years, and the data collected will prove critical for planning maintenance and improvements in the future.
All employees and interns will be carrying identification while conducting the asset inventory.
