Household Hazardous Waste Program
The Water Pollution Control
Department has responsibility for administering the household hazardous waste program
for the City of Independence. The City participates in a regional program with the
City of Kansas City, Missouri, which has a permanent regional household hazardous
waste facility at 4707 Deramus Road. Residents of Independence may use the regional
facility free of charge. It is open all during the year. Please call the regional
facility for additional information at (816) 513-8401.
This
Program provides the environmentally responsible alternative to certain wastes being
poured down drains or onto the ground. Proper disposal of household hazardous wastes
makes homes safer and reduces health risks. The average home can accumulate as much
as 100 pounds of chemical wastes each year from very common household and lawn &
garden products, such as: paint, cleaners, pesticides, weed killers, fertilizers,
antifreeze, motor oil, and gasoline.
A
free mobile collection is held in Independence for residents once a year. The mobile
collection has become very popular with residents and Water Pollution Control is
proud to sponsor the event as part of its effort to protect the environment. For
more information about the mobile collection, please contact us at (816) 325-7711.
