The City of Independence has partnered with Midwest Recycling Centers to offer electronics and appliance recycling year-round. Almost anything with a cord or a battery is accepted.

Vista Avenue Recycling Center

Location: 875 Vista Avenue, 1 mile east of M-291 on Truman Road
       8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Sundays
     10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Mondays


35th Street Recycling Center

Location: 13600 E. 35th Street, 1/2 mile west of Noland Road
     10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Fridays
       8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Saturdays

The recycling centers will be closed on the following days:

New Year's Day - Friday, Jan. 1                        Labor Day - Monday, Sept. 5

Day after Thanksgiving - Friday, Nov. 25        Christmas Eve - Saturday, Dec. 24

Christmas Day - Sunday, Dec. 25                    New Year's Day - Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017

Items accepted: office paper, magazines, newspaper, cardboard and paperboard, steel cans, tin cans, aluminum cans, plastic #1 - #7, plastic shopping bags, glass bottles, toner and ink cartridges, and rechargeable and dry cell batteries.  Materials must be separated and placed in the appropriate bins.

Styrofoam and VHS tapes are not accepted.   

Electronics accepted:  TVs, DVD and VHS players, computer monitors, towers and peripherals, stereos, gaming systems and cell phones

Other items accepted: appliances, air conditioners, lawn and garden equipment  (Drain all fluids from lawn mowers, weed eaters, snow blowers, etc.)

All items are free except computer monitors, televisions and items containing Freon:

$5 each - All sizes of CRT computer monitors unless a computer CPU is dropped off at the same time.  In this case the CRT monitor will be accepted free. 

$10 each - All items containing Freon (air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, etc.)

$10 each - All sizes of LED, LCD and Plasma flat-screen TVs

$30 each - CRT TVs 26" or less 

$50 each - CRT TVs 27" and larger and all sizes of Console TVs, True Big Screen TVs and Projection TVs
