(INDEPENDENCE, Mo.) Tuesday, April 8, 2014 – Join the more than 1,000 people who have already registered for the third annual Independence Park Trot 5K Run/Walk to be held Saturday, May 3.
The Independence Health Department has partnered with Centerpoint Medical Center to hold the certified 5K event as part of the Building a Healthier Independence (BHI) initiative. Registration is open until April 20 at www.independenceparktrot.com.
The race is slated to start at 8 a.m. rain or shine at Waterfall Park, located just south of Bass Pro Shops. There is no limit on the number of participants.
BHI Project Coordinator Alicia Nelson said, “We heard a lot of good comments about the event after last year’s race, in spite of the cold and rain. This is a perfect way to encourage physical activity while at the same time sharing our City’s beautiful parks.”
More than 1,800 people registered for the Park Trot in 2013, and although the weather didn’t cooperate, more than 1,100 were present for packet pick-up. Registrants came from nine states, and from as far away as Maryland.
Awards will be given based on time completion of the run for the following age groups: 14 and younger, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, and 75 and older. The top three finishers in each age group will receive a medal and the first place finisher of each age group will also receive a voucher for four tickets to a 2014 Royals game.
Children 10 and under are eligible to compete in a Kids’ Run, which will begin after the completion of the 5K Run/Walk. A parent or legal guardian must sign a waiver for anyone under age 18 participating in the race.
